Generally, toothed drill bits for drilling extremely hard rock layers mainly use spherical teeth, with a drilling pressure of 892~1339 MPa and a rotational speed of 50~80 r/min; toothed drill bits for drilling hard and medium-hard rock layers use conical spherical teeth, with a drilling pressure of 714~1071 MPa and a rotational speed of 60~100 r/min; toothed drill bits for drilling soft and medium-soft rock layers use wedge-shaped teeth or edge wedge teeth, with a drilling pressure of 535~803 MPa and a rotational speed of 80~120 r/min. Hard alloy drills are classified into four basic types: integral hard alloy drills, hard alloy replaceable insert drills, welded hard alloy drills, and replaceable hard alloy tooth crown drills. What are the working principles, advantages and disadvantages of the gun drill, BTA system and jet suction drill system commonly used in deep hole processing? And in which scenarios are they respectively applicable?
Drill guns, BTA systems and jet suction drills are three mainstream deep hole processing technologies. They solve the problems of chip removal and cooling that ordinary drills cannot handle. However, their implementation principles and application scopes are significantly different. 1. Gun Drill System - External Chip Removal Deep Hole Processing Working Principle: The gun drill is a single-piece carbide tool that resembles a pistol bullet. High-pressure cutting fluid (approximately 2-10 MPa) is forcibly injected through the hollow channel inside the drill rod to the cutting edge at the front end of the drill head for cooling and lubrication. Then, the chips are expelled along the annular space between the external V-shaped chip-receiving groove of the drill rod and the already machined hole wall in the reverse direction. "Internal Inlet and External Outlet" is its core feature. Advantages: High precision: The processed hole dimensions can reach IT7-IT9 grade, with good straightness and surface roughness of Ra value ranging from 0.8 to 3.2 μm. Wide hole diameter range: It is highly suitable for processing small-diameter deep holes. The typical processing range is φ1.5mm to φ40mm, with a depth-to-diameter ratio of up to 100:1. Good surface quality: Single-edge cutting, with asymmetric force but balanced by the guide strip, the processing process is smooth. Disadvantages: Limited chip discharge channel: Chips must be discharged from the limited V-shaped groove on the drill pipe's exterior. Therefore, the chip-breaking requirement is extremely high and it is not suitable for processing ductile materials that tend to form long ribbon-shaped chips. Lower efficiency: Single-edge cutting and limited chip discharge capacity result in a relatively slow feed speed. Application scenarios: Widely used in deep hole processing of medium and small diameters, high precision, and high output, such as spray oil holes in oil pump and oil nozzle, flow channels in hydraulic valve blocks, medical devices, mold cooling water holes, etc. II. BTA System - Internal Chip Discharge Deep Hole Processing Working principle: The BTA system consists of a drill bit, drill pipe, and a dedicated BTA drill sleeve (oil distributor). High-pressure cutting fluid (approximately 1-5 MPa) is injected through the drill sleeve into the annular space between the drill pipe and the hole wall, flows towards the drill bit head, cools and lubricates, and then carries the chips out from the huge hollow channel inside the drill pipe in the reverse direction. "External advance and internal discharge" is its core feature. Advantages: Chipping is smooth: The inner hole of the drill rod is the only channel for chip removal, with ample space, capable of handling various forms of chips, especially suitable for processing tough materials such as steel and alloy steel. High efficiency: It mostly uses multi-edge cutting and has smooth chip removal, allowing for larger feed rates, resulting in high material removal rate. Wide bore diameter range: It is mainly used for the processing of medium and large deep holes with a diameter of φ12mm or above. The depth-to-diameter ratio is usually less than 100. Disadvantages: Complex system: Special BTA drill holders and sealing devices are required, and the workpiece structure needs to allow for the installation of drill holders. High initial investment: The cost of tools and auxiliary equipment is relatively high. Applicable scenarios: Efficient rough machining and semi-finishing of medium and large deep holes in large shaft parts, gun barrels, energy equipment (such as boiler tube plates), hydraulic cylinder tubes, etc. III. Jet Drilling System - Internal Chip Removal Improvement Working principle: The jet drilling is an improved version of BTA, also using internal chip removal. Its uniqueness lies in the use of a double-layer pipe structure for the drill rod. A part of the high-pressure cutting fluid, like the BTA system, is pressed into the cutting zone through the gap between the inner and outer pipes; the other part is discharged through multiple backward-sloping nozzles on the inner pipe, utilizing the Venturi effect to generate suction. The "push-suction combination" works together to significantly improve chip removal efficiency and reliability, and the required oil pressure is lower than that of the BTA system. Advantages: Best chip removal effect: The combined push and suction action ensures thorough and reliable chip removal, especially suitable for processing extremely deep holes and materials with high processing difficulty. Lower oil pressure requirement: Compared to the pure BTA system, the oil pressure required to achieve the same effect is lower, and the system is more energy-efficient. Disadvantages: Most complex structure: The double-layer pipe design makes the manufacturing of the drill rod complex, with the highest cost, and the effective inner diameter of the inner hole is relatively reduced. Slightly poorer rigidity: The double-layer pipe structure may weaken the overall rigidity of the drill rod. Applicable scenarios: Suitable for ultra-deep hole processing with extremely high reliability requirements, as well as deep hole processing of difficult-to-machine materials (such as stainless steel, high-temperature alloys), complementing and enhancing the application scope of the BTA system. Summary selection: For precision and drilling small holes -> Select gun drill. For efficiency and drilling medium-large holes -> Select BTA.
